Proposals are always a little nerve wracking, usually because women are pretty keen on what’s going on, so surprises are hard as it is. Add Big Sur with no cell service, a couple you’ve never met, and you’ve got a few more areas of concern… But for this proposal, the Soberanes Fire was the icing on the cake.
Not two weeks ago, I found McWay Falls to be closed when trying to surprise our sweet friends with a proposal there… Despite the best efforts of our Googling and trying to be prepared for anything, Austin and I arrived to find the park had just been closed, as the fire was cresting over the ridge. Unable to contact Mark, Austin and I decided to drive up the coast toward their hotel (Post Ranch Inn) and spot their car along the way (guys, always send me a photo of your rental car/whatever you are driving).
I couldn’t make this up if I tried. As we were driving north, we spotted their rental. Immediately turned around and followed them down to McWay Falls, knowing they’d park and see what the situation was (chaos). We parked right next to them, without Mark even realizing it at first… Acting like tourists, we made small talk about the Falls and how we’d get there.
After some mess about parking, Mark managed to get Mariel out of the car and away from him for long enough to tell the nicest police officer what he was doing, and pleading to let him park half in the road while he popped the question. Oh my gosh you guys, the police officer was on our side and the next thing we knew, Mark was on his knee, Mariel in tears. All the while, one especially grouchy state park officer ended up giving Mark a ticket for parking in the road, but the police officer actually turned around and had her remove it from their car!
This was seriously one of my favorite proposals to date – The reaction, the help of the police officer, and the genuine surprise amidst the chaos. Everything was so perfect.
